DAY 5 — Mary Magdalene: The First Witness

Scripture — John 20:11–18 (NLT)

Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she stooped to look inside and saw two angels in white, sitting where Jesus’ body had been.
“Dear woman, why are you crying?” they asked her.
“Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have laid him.”

Then she turned and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not realize it was Jesus.
“Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?” he asked.
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
Jesus said, “Don’t cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Passage Summary:
Mary Magdalene arrives at Jesus’ tomb grieving. She finds it empty, sees angels, and encounters the risen Jesus. When He calls her by name, recognition and hope ignite. Mary becomes the first witness of the resurrection, sent to share the news with the disciples.

Devotional:
Mary shows up expecting death, not hope. Her heart is broken, and she doesn’t even recognize Jesus standing in front of her.

Then He says her name: “Mary.”

Everything changes in an instant. The risen Christ isn’t just history — He’s personal. Resurrection isn’t about grand announcements or fireworks first. It starts with relationship. Jesus meets Mary in her grief, not with condemnation, but with intimacy and life.

She becomes the first messenger of hope, sent to tell others that death is defeated, and God’s promises are alive.

Pause + Reflect:
“The resurrection was God’s ‘Amen’ to Christ’s ‘It is finished.’” — Timothy Keller

This reminds us: Easter isn’t just something that happened “then,” it’s power for your today. God wants to meet you in your grief, your doubt, your waiting — and send you out with hope.

Think About:
Where have I stopped expecting hope?
Who might God be sending me to tell about Jesus?

Pray:
Jesus, thank You for calling me by name. Help me live like resurrection is real and carry Your hope to others.
