The heart of a Rust City Group is to care for people and carry the culture of Rust City Church.

You don’t have to follow this guide like a script! Use discernment from the Holy Spirit as you lead your group discussion.

If you notice that someone in your group needs additional care or support that’s beyond your capacity, please let a pastor know.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION OPTION:

If you had to be trapped in a TV show or movie universe for a week, which one would you choose?

HE Promises: Part 3

SPEAKER: PASTOR KARL WENDEL

Scriptures—

John 14:27, Isaiah 26:1-3, Philippians 4:6-7

Key Takeaways—

  • Jesus promises His peace, which is different from worldly peace

  • True peace is found in God's presence, not in the absence of problems

  • Fixing our thoughts on God leads to perfect peace (shalom)

  • We can experience God's peace by surrendering our worries to Him

  • God's peace is a testimony to others and reflects Jesus in our lives

Discussion Questions—

  1. How does the story of Jesus calming the storm relate to our internal struggles, and what can we learn from His response?

  2. What does it mean to you that Jesus offers His own peace, not just any peace, and how might this change your approach to difficult situations?

  3. How does the concept of 'shalom shalom' (perfect peace) differ from worldly peace, and how can we cultivate it in our daily lives?

  4. In what ways can fixing our thoughts on God, as mentioned in Isaiah 26, practically help us maintain peace during challenging times?

  5. In what ways does Philippians 4:6-7 provide a 'cheat code' for peace, and how can we apply this in our daily lives?

  6. How does the analogy of the 'cushion of the sea' relate to finding peace in Christ, and what might this look like in practice?

  7. What role does surrender play in experiencing God's peace, and why might it be challenging for us to fully surrender our burdens?

  8. How can we balance honestly wrestling with God about our hardships while still maintaining faith and peace, as exemplified by the speaker's aunt and uncle?

  9. How can maintaining peace and joy during trials serve as a witness to others about the reality of Christ in our lives?

Practical application—

Meditation Challenge: Choose one verse about God's peace (e.g., John 14:27 or Philippians 4:7) and spend 5 minutes each day meditating on it.

Closing Prayer—

Father, thank You for being our source of true and lasting peace. We ask that each person in this group would experience Your presence in a deep and personal way this week. In every situation they face, remind them that You are near and in control. Help us to trust You fully and to rest in the peace that only You can give. Give us opportunities to be a reflection of Your love and peace to those around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
