The heart of a Rust City Group is to care for people and carry the culture of Rust City Church.

You don’t have to follow this guide like a script! Use discernment from the Holy Spirit as you lead your group discussion.

If you notice that someone in your group needs additional care or support that’s beyond your capacity, please let a pastor know.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION OPTION:

If you could be the main character in any movie, who would you be?

The only ghost pt. 2

SPEAKER: Pastor April Surles

Scriptures—

2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Corinthians 2:10-12; Galatians 5:16-26

Key Takeaways—

  • The Holy Spirit is real, personal, and present—not something to learn about from a distance, but someone to experience and walk with daily.

  • Walking in the Spirit requires cultivating rhythms (not rules) that keep us connected to God's presence.

  • The Rhythm of Fellowship means sharing our life with the Holy Spirit, treating Him as family rather than a guest who visits only on Sundays. Acknowledging God's presence in ordinary moments (driving, doing dishes, going to the gym) transforms mundane activities into opportunities for connection.

  • The Rhythm of Intimacy involves knowing God's heart, not just His rules—understanding His character, voice, and desires. Reading Scripture should be about knowing God's heart and character, not just memorizing commandments.

  • Fasting from noise and distractions (social media, entertainment) allows us to prioritize God's voice and remember what He says about us.

  • The Rhythm of Cooperation means saying yes to God's assignments and working as laborers together with Him.

Discussion Questions—

  1. In what ways do we treat the Holy Spirit more like a guest in our life rather than family, and what would need to change for Him to truly feel at home in us?

  2. How does the concept of fellowship with the Holy Spirit differ from simply attending church services or having religious routines?

  3. What ordinary or mundane moments in your daily life could become opportunities to acknowledge and commune with the Holy Spirit?

  4. How can you discern whether you are seeking God's “hand” or what He can do for you versus seeking His “heart” to know Him for who He is?

  5. In what ways do the distractions of modern life like social media and entertainment compete with God's voice in defining our identity and purpose?

  6. What does cooperation with the Holy Spirit look like practically when it comes to saying yes to His assignments and purposes for your life?

  7. How does creating rhythms of intimacy with God rather than following formulas or rules change the way you approach spiritual disciplines like prayer, worship, and Scripture reading?

Practical application—

Choose ONE of the following practices to implement this week:

Option 1: Fellowship

  • Start each morning by saying "Good morning, Holy Spirit. How can I be attentive to you today?"

  • Choose one daily activity (commute, exercise, chores) to intentionally acknowledge God's presence

  • Before bed, reflect: "Did I treat You like a guest or like family today?"

Option 2: Intimacy

  • Read Scripture daily with this question: "What does this reveal about God's heart?"

  • Set aside 15-30 minutes for private worship (no distractions)

  • Fast from one distraction this week (social media, TV, etc.) and replace that time with seeking God's presence

  • Journal your answer to: "Holy Spirit, what are You teaching me in this season?"

Option 3: Cooperation

  • Identify one person you can "sow into" this week through encouragement or discipleship

  • Ask God: "What are You pruning in me right now? What seeds of faith are You planting?"

  • Say "yes" to one specific thing you sense God asking of you

Closing Prayer—

Holy Spirit,

Thank you for living within and guiding us. Make your presence more real and tangible in our daily lives. Give us sensitivity to your voice and courage to say "yes" to your assignments.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
