The heart of a Rust City Group is to care for people and carry the culture of Rust City Church.
You don’t have to follow this guide like a script! Use discernment from the Holy Spirit as you lead your group discussion.
If you notice that someone in your group needs additional care or support that’s beyond your capacity, please let a pastor know.
ICEBREAKER QUESTION OPTION:
What would be your life’s theme song right now, and why?
I’m Fine: Pt. 3
SPEAKER: Pastor Wes Washington
Scriptures—
Phil. 4:10-13; Matt. 11:29
Key Takeaways—
Core Theme - Contentment Surpasses Comfort
Pressure reveals our foundation: We often blame external pressure for breaking us, but it actually reveals what we have been using to "hold ourselves together" (e.g., money, relationships, substances, success, reputation).
Contentment is learned, not given: Like a toddler who isn't born content, we must learn to be satisfied in Jesus through life's uncomfortable circumstances.
Don't swap the Provider for the provision: We must avoid placing our trust in the gifts God provides instead of trusting in the God who provided them.
The secret is Christ: We cannot rely on our own strength. True contentment comes from acknowledging and truly embracing that "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Discussion Questions—
What are the common "packing tape" solutions you reach for when you feel the pressure of brokenness?
Why do you think it is so difficult for us to be content in Jesus when our circumstances are difficult?
Have you ever experienced a time when God provided a breakthrough, only for you to lose your focus on Him afterward?
What does it mean to you that Paul himself had to learn contentment rather than simply having it naturally?
How can we begin to shift our perspective to see "uncomfortable" life moments as opportunities for growth rather than just burdens?
How does the image of "taking Christ's yoke" change your understanding of how to handle your daily stress?
Practical application—
Consider implementing one of the following this week:
Option 1: Identify Your Go-To Comfort
When you feel stress or pressure this week, pause and identify the first thing you want to run to (e.g., social media, food, distraction). Instead, pray for 60 seconds before acting, asking the Lord to give you what you need in that moment.
Option 2: Memorize Philippians 4:13
Write down "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" and place it somewhere visible to remind you of your true source of strength, perhaps as the lock screen on your phone.
option 3: Practice Gratitude in Discomfort
When you face an inconvenient or stressful situation this week, vocalize one thing you are grateful to God for, regardless of your current circumstances. Then vocalize another. And another.
Closing Prayer—
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the only One who can truly hold us together. We confess that we often run to temporary things for comfort when life gets difficult.
Help us to learn the secret of being content in You, regardless of our circumstances. Help us trust that Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. Strengthen us by Your power this week.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
