As a parent, it’s exciting to see your child take steps in their faith journey! But when they start asking about getting baptized, you might wonder, Are they ready? Do they really understand what baptism means? Don’t worry—you’re not alone in asking these questions, and we’re here to help you navigate this important decision.
What Is Baptism?
Baptism is a way for us to tell the world we’ve decided to follow Jesus. Think of it like wearing your favorite team’s jersey—it shows everyone whose team you’re on! It’s also an act of obedience, following the instructions Jesus gave His disciples:
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
When someone is baptized, it’s like painting a picture for everyone to see. Standing in the water represents Jesus dying on the cross, going under the water represents His burial, and coming back up is a beautiful picture of His resurrection. Baptism also shows that we’ve made the decision to live a new life, just as Romans 6:4 describes:
“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.”
How Do I Know If My Child Is Ready?
Here are a few questions to help you gauge if your child is ready for baptism:
Have they made the decision to follow Jesus?
Baptism is a public declaration of faith, so the first step is deciding to follow Jesus. Does your child understand what sin is, why Jesus came, and what it means to trust Him as their Savior? Can they explain why they want to be baptized?
Ask your child, “Why do you want to get baptized?” If they can express in their own words that it’s a way to show they love Jesus and want to follow Him, they may be ready!Do they understand what baptism symbolizes?
Talk to your child about how baptism represents Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Ask them if they can see how it connects to their own decision to live a new life in Christ.
What If They’re Not Ready?
That’s okay! Baptism is an important step, but it doesn’t need to be rushed. Keep having conversations about faith, encourage their questions, and pray with them. God’s timing is perfect, and when they’re ready, you’ll know.
Celebrate the Moment
If your child is ready to be baptized, celebrate! This is a huge milestone in their faith journey. Talk about how baptism is a way to show others their decision to follow Jesus and their commitment to live for Him.
Then, sign them up for the next baptism service and make the day special—invite friends and family, take lots of pictures, and cheer them on as they take this big step. It’s a moment worth remembering!
