ICEBREAKER QUESTION OPTION:
What’s your favorite way to beat the heat?
Christian-ish: PART 4
SPEAKER: PASTOR April Surles
Scriptures—
I Samuel 1:7, 9-11; II Corinthians 12:7-10; Luke 8:38-39
Key Takeaways—
Sometimes God doesn't do what we ask because it's not the right time
God may delay to keep us humble and refine our character
God's "no" can lay the foundation for someone else's breakthrough
Our primary need is God's presence, word, and will, not just miracles
Trusting God's goodness even in difficult circumstances is crucial to our growth and peace
Discussion Questions—
1. How do you typically respond when God doesn't answer your prayers in the way or timeframe you expect?
2. In what ways can waiting on God's timing be a form of spiritual growth and character development?
3. What 'thorns in the flesh' might God be using in your life to keep you humble and dependent on Him? How can you embrace these challenges as opportunities for spiritual growth?
4. In what ways might God's 'no' to your prayers actually be setting up someone else's breakthrough or blessing?
5. In what areas of your life do you need to surrender your timeline to God and trust in His perfect timing and plan?
6. Does prioritizing God's presence, word, and will over our perceived needs change our approach to prayer and daily living?
7. How can we cultivate a non-transactional relationship with God, one that doesn't treat Him like a 'slot machine' of blessings?
8. What does it mean to you personally to declare ‘God is still good’ in the midst of disappointment or loss? How can this declaration shape your faith?
Practical application—
Identify an area in your life where you're waiting on God. Write down three ways you can "wait differently" and trust deeper during this time.
Reach out to someone in your life who may be struggling with unanswered prayer or disappointment. Offer encouragement and support, reminding them of God's faithfulness.
Closing Prayer—
Heavenly Father,
When You don't answer as we expect, help us trust that You are still good and still working. Like Hannah, teach us to wait with faith, to see Your timing as a chance to grow.
Use our struggles to draw us closer to You. Help us discern Your voice through Scripture and community, and surrender our plans in exchange for Your perfect will.
May our prayers not be about getting what we want, but about knowing You more. Even when it hurts, let our hearts declare—You are good.
In Jesus’ name, Amen
